There are now more than 150 universities and Higher Education (HE) providers across the UK, and each offers a wide range of degree courses. As a result, it can be difficult to decide the best option for you.

With this in mind, Somerset College has created this guide to help you find the right university and degree course for your interests, experience and priorities.

Boost your career prospects

Every graduate hopes to secure a dream job within their chosen field. That makes employability and strong industry links an important consideration when considering where to study.

We recommend choosing a university that has a focus on equipping students with the skills and experience to find a job immediately after graduation.

Look for involvement by industry experts in the degree programme, a presence at sector-specific trade shows, work placements for students, and high-profile alumni in your favoured career area.

Flexible approach to study

The length of time you’ll spend studying is a major consideration, because it affects how quickly you can start earning.

In the UK, a three-year full-time degree is standard, but institutions like Somerset College also allow you to study on a year-by-year basis. This means you can complete each year separately, at your own pace, with breaks in between to save, go travelling, or gain industry experience. 

Living and Accommodation

Distance from home is an important factor in an undergraduate’s choice of university. You may want to be close enough that you can return home at weekends, or alternatively you may be happy to study at the other end of the country.

A benefit of studying closer to home is that it can often be more affordable. For example, at Somerset College, attendance on campus for study is scheduled for three days per week, meaning our students can live at home and commute to campus in order to reduce cost. It also frees them to secure part-time employment to help pay for their studies.

Another option that we offer is flexible Halls of Residence accommodation. This enables students to only stay in Halls when they’re required on campus, helping keep travel time and costs to a minimum. But when teaching finishes for the week, they’re free to return home, and won’t be charged rent for a room they’re not using.

We’ve offered some guidance on what to consider when choosing your university. But it’s vital that you carry out your own research.

To do this, make the most of university prospectuses and relevant websites. And be sure to visit the places you’re most keen on, so that you can experience the campus and study environments at first hand.
