In line with Somerset College’s heritage, and commitment to excelling in the field of Art & Design, £12 million has recently been invested in the full refurbishment of our iconic Art & Design building.
The Arts House at Somerset College is due to open for the 2016/17 academic year and will provide our undergraduate students with the perfect environment in which to harness their creative talents, and fulfil their potential.
A fresh new look for our creative centre of excellence
The building, which houses the School of Art and Design, was originally constructed in the 1970s, and at the time was a ground breaking design which received many accolades.
However, in order to keep up with the demands of the modern creative industries, the new building will provide state-of-the-art facilities to all of our Art and Design students, within a creative and inspiring setting.
Fulfil your potential
Once completed, The Arts House will provide a breeding ground for the next generation of creative individuals, making use of its unique light spaces, state-of-the-art industry standard equipment and expert lecturing staff.
Furthermore, each undergraduate student will benefit from their own personal studio space for the duration of their course. This will provide individuals with the space and freedom needed to really flourish and achieve their full potential.
Become our next high profile graduate
Throughout The Arts House Project, the College has consulted with employers from the creative industries to ensure that the facilities and degree courses really meet the needs of the arts sector.
As a result, each of our undergraduate programmes have been designed specifically to prepare students for the world of work, and the Arts House will provide a cutting edge setting for the delivery of these vocationally focused degrees. This includes Media Make-up, Fashion Design, Graphic Media & Communications, Textiles & Surface Design and from September 2016, Fine Art.
Somerset College Principal, Rachel Davies explains: “Somerset College has a strong reputation when it comes to equipping students for the world of work. Many of our Art and Design alumni have progressed to top jobs in high-profile companies such as Fat Face, Abercrombie and Fitch, and Debenhams. With the Arts House Project, we hope to build on that reputation, and equip even more people with excellent workplace skills and great prospects for the future.”
